Niko Kinnunen

Game and level designer, and programmer.

Hello!

I create video games, mods and levels.
My current emphasis is on designing and programming using Unity and C#.

I have practised game design by making well over a hundred mods, levels, gamemodes and compilations in total for a very wide variety of games. In recent years I have also started developing video games.

My expertise has been primarily self-taught through practise and online resources, but I also pursued formal education in game development at Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences. The education provided practical experience in Unity, programming, agile methods and project management. Nowadays, I continue practising and participating in different game developer events.

Defining traits of mine:

  1. I am perpetually curious and always enthusiastic about learning!
  2. People describe me as a kind and empathetic person, and a great tutor.
  3. I am a team player and always seeking like-minded people.

Alongside my self-directed learning, I also enjoy teaching and assisting others with their projects. I believe it is a great way to get better at soft skills, such as communicating new ideas.

During my free time, I make everything from board and card games to electronics and art, and then go rest in a hammock somewhere in nature.
Balance and healthy habits are the key to success!

Some portfolio projects:

Drive a motorbike, collect eggs and beat the best times!

MopoMania is a recent release. It was created as a portfolio piece and programming exercise.

Objectives

My goal was to get back up to speed with Unity while learning intermediate C# features and some important programming patterns. The books C# Player's Guide and Game Programming Patterns were valuable resources for discovering topics I did not know of yet.

End results

I feel increasingly comfortable tackling complex projects and thus consider this fun adventure a success. Initially, the deliberate exploration affected the project's cohesion and speed. However, such outcome is to be expected from exercises aimed at learning. In the end, the game turned out just nicely!

A first-person endless runner, where you hop on clouds!

CloudHopper is a small, complete game, made for Games Job Fair Spring 2024 - Unity Programming Challenge.

Objectives

The task was to create a unique endless runner within just three weeks. Coming up with a fun gameplay loop was surprisingly difficult this time, and thus it took me some time to experiment. Ultimately, I developed a first-person platforming game, where the player bounces and dives from cloud to another at increasing velocity. The player is rewarded for taking risks by skipping platforms.

End results

I finished on time with a complete and fun game! While I had hoped to have time to learn and implement some UGS features, object pooling with various cloud patterns, and over-kill multi-threading, these tasks proved to be too time-consuming. Nevertheless, the experience was still definitely worth it!

Be the first to bomb your enemies with explosive eggs and survive!

Fowl Play was my final assignment for a Unity course at Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences.

Objectives

My goal was to learn as much as possible about Unity throughout the course. The game, all assets and code were deliberately self-made, exceptions being some sprites and the enemy AI's A* path-finding algorithm.

End results

I received full marks for the course, and I am thrilled with the level of achievement I attained in such a short time.

Other projects

Among many, these I'm especially proud of:

ShootHouse

An intense one to four player semi-linear challenge against bots in Counter-Strike: Source. Valve implemented something similar in CS:GO a couple of years later.

Toripeli

A business board game with a focus on building, trading and bargaining. It includes a magnetic board, wooden pieces and 3D printed parts. A massive success among my friends!

#hardcoop

An overhauling cooperative experience for Insurgency, encouraging teamwork and tactics. This spiraled into a thriving worldwide multiplayer community on its own, fostering camaraderie and strategic gameplay.
